Shingles in contemporary architecture – Lecture by Hermann Kaufmann

Shingles in contemporary architecture – Lecture by Hermann Kaufmann

Time & Place

November 7, 2025, 5:30–9:00 p.m.
Holzbau Schmäh, Production Hall, Torenstraße 1/1, 88709 Meersburg, Germany

Hermann Kaufmann is one of the most influential figures in modern timber construction in the German-speaking world. For decades, he has set standards in combining architectural quality, sustainability, and craftsmanship. A particular focus of his work lies in the design of façades — and here, the shingle plays a central role.

In his lecture “Shingles in Contemporary Architecture”, he will show how this traditional façade element can be applied in modern architecture, what design possibilities it offers, and what role it plays in sustainability, material honesty, and regional building culture. He will also share insights and experiences from decades of architectural practice.

Following the lecture, a discussion round will explore topics such as material selection, building culture, and craftsmanship in greater depth. The evening will conclude with a buffet — offering opportunities for informal conversation and networking.

The event will take place on the Holzbau Schmäh Campus in Meersburg — a showcase project for sustainable construction. The modern building combines functionality and aesthetics, providing an ideal setting for our workshop and evening program.

Please note: The event will be held in German only.
